From spring to golden autumn, the region around Sterzing and the Wipptal offers an extraordinary variety of outdoor activities. Particularly popular is the Thuiner Kirchsteig, which starts directly from the Lahnerhof, a historic footpath that leads into the old town of Sterzing. Other beautiful routes are the Sterzing circular path (Gaismair), the bee trail in Trens, the yogurt trail through Sterzing or the legendary Pfeifer-Huisele trail in Ratschings.
Alpine hut hikes
The valleys around Sterzing are known for their diverse alpine hut hikes. Directly from the Lahnerhof you can reach, for example, the Freundalm, which is ideal for a leisurely hike with a wonderful view.
Another popular destination is the Prantner Alm at about 1,800 m altitude, which impresses with a breathtaking panorama over the Wipptal valley. In the Pflersch Valley, the Allriss Alm invites you to a particularly beautiful hike in peaceful nature.
In the Ridnaun Valley there are also numerous worthwhile alpine hut destinations such as the Stadelalm, as well as in the nearby Jaufen Valley the Bergalm, both of which impress with typical South Tyrolean alpine culture and cozy refreshment stops.
On the Rosskopf above Sterzing, numerous managed alpine huts also await you, which are ideal for enjoyable hikes with wide views over the Wipptal.
The Rosskopf – our local and experience mountain
The Rosskopf, our local mountain above Sterzing, is a popular excursion destination for the whole family. Here you will find the RossyWalk themed trail, the summer toboggan run, numerous hiking trails as well as several managed alpine huts with wonderful views over the Wipptal Valley.
The Rosskopf Köpfl (2,189 m), the striking summit of the Rosskopf, is also a worthwhile destination and offers a particularly beautiful panoramic view over Sterzing, the Wipptal and the surrounding valleys.

Mountaineering and alpine tours
Around Sterzing, a wide variety of tour possibilities opens up for mountain sports enthusiasts. From scenic summit hikes to demanding high alpine tours, numerous routes can be found for different levels of difficulty.
A particularly popular destination is the Zinseler (2,422 m) above Sterzing. The panoramic summit is known for its wide view over the Wipptal. A sunrise tour is particularly impressive, which is also manageable for experienced hikers without special alpine equipment.
Directly above the Lahnerhof lies the Telfer Weißen (2,588 m), a worthwhile summit destination with an impressive panorama over Sterzing and the surrounding valleys.
For experienced mountaineers, the Hochfeiler (3,510 m) in the Pfitsch Valley, as the highest peak of the Zillertal Alps and one of the highest mountains of the Eastern Alps, offers a demanding high alpine tour. In clear weather, according to mountain guides, the view from the summit even reaches as far as the Adriatic.
Also well-known alpine destinations such as the Tribulaun hut in the Pflersch Valley or the high alpine Becherhaus in the Ridnaun Valley, the highest mountain hut in South Tyrol, are among the special tours in the region and make the mountain world around Sterzing so diverse.
Alpine crossing with destination Sterzing
Sterzing is a popular destination for one of the most famous long-distance hikes in the Alps: the alpine crossing from Tegernsee to Sterzing. In several stages, the route leads from Bavaria across the Tyrolean Alps to South Tyrol and finally ends in the historic Fugger town of Sterzing.
For many hikers, the arrival in Sterzing is a special moment after several days in the mountains. The Lahnerhof above Sterzing is ideal for coming to rest after the tour, recharging energy and letting the impressions of the alpine crossing end in a relaxed way.
Mountain biking around Sterzing
The Wipptal Valley around Sterzing is one of the most diverse biking areas in South Tyrol. Directly from the Lahnerhof, numerous tours start through forests, along forest roads and up to the surrounding alpine huts. Particularly popular is the route from Thuins via the Freundalm and the Telfer alpine huts up to the Rosskopf, which combines varied landscapes, beautiful views and typical South Tyrolean alpine culture.
In addition, mountain bikers will find numerous other tours throughout the Wipptal Valley – from leisurely alpine hut loops to sporty climbs into the valleys of Ratschings, Ridnaun or Pfitsch.
A particularly exciting route is the Sandjoch tour at the Brenner, which not only impresses with its landscape but also passes by historic bunker facilities and thus combines nature and history in a unique way.
Road bike and gravel bike tours
The well-known cycle path from the Brenner to Verona runs directly through the Wipptal Valley. The route is part of the popular cycling route from the Brenner to the sea and is increasingly used by road bike and gravel bike fans.

Adventure
High rope course Skytrek in Sterzing
Just a few minutes from the town center, the Skytrek high rope course awaits you in the Nordpark of Sterzing. In several courses with rope bridges, nets and ziplines, visitors climb between the treetops and test their skill and courage. Different levels of difficulty make the park interesting for both beginners and sporty climbers.
Climbing and climbing halls
Climbing enthusiasts also get their money’s worth around Sterzing. Popular with both young and old is the Stange climbing hall in the Ratschings Valley, which offers modern training opportunities and various levels of difficulty.
One of the largest facilities in the region is the Vertikale climbing hall in Brixen, which impresses with numerous routes, a large bouldering area and training opportunities for every level.
In addition to the indoor halls, there are also several rock climbing areas in the Wipptal Valley. Particularly popular are the climbing rocks around the Sprechenstein ruins near Sterzing, which offer varied routes in a beautiful setting.

Via ferratas in the surrounding valleys
The mountain world around Sterzing and the Wipptal Valley offers several varied via ferratas with different levels of difficulty. Especially in Ratschings, new, modern via ferratas have been developed in recent years, which are well suited for beginners and sporty enthusiasts.
Also in the Pfitsch Valley, embedded in the high alpine landscape of the Zillertal Alps, there are worthwhile via ferratas, for example the via ferrata Ölberg, with impressive rock formations and wide views.
For experienced mountaineers, the via ferrata on the Lampskopf in the Pflersch Valley is a special highlight. The demanding route leads towards the Tribulaun hut and combines sporting challenge with an impressive backdrop around the striking Tribulaun peaks.
Rafting and kayaking on the Eisack
The Eisack river offers ideal conditions for varied whitewater experiences. The tours usually start downstream from Sterzing in the Freienfeld area and lead through varied river landscapes of the Wipptal Valley.
Whether beginner or adventure seeker – rafting and kayaking tours are generally offered in guided groups and are also perfectly suitable for beginners. Experienced guides accompany you safely through the rapids and make the experience possible even without prior knowledge.

Discover the wine region around Brixen
Only about 30 minutes from the Lahnerhof, one of the northernmost wine-growing areas in Italy begins around Brixen. Sunny slopes, historic wineries and small Buschenschänke characterize the landscape. The region is particularly known for elegant white wines such as Sylvaner, Kerner, Müller-Thurgau or Gewürztraminer.
Along the vineyards around Brixen and Klausen, numerous walking and hiking trails invite you to combine nature, culture and South Tyrolean wine enjoyment. Many wineries also offer tastings and insights into the traditional wine production of the region.
The Dolomites – UNESCO World Heritage
The Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009, are among the most impressive mountain landscapes in the world. Their striking rock formations rise in many places over 3,000 meters into the sky and give the region an unmistakable silhouette.
In summer, the Dolomites transform with their gentle alpine meadows, spectacular rocks and numerous hiking trails into a paradise for nature and mountain lovers. In winter, sunny ski areas, perfectly groomed slopes and a unique mountain backdrop attract visitors.

Ötzi – the man from the ice
One of the most fascinating discoveries of archaeology was made in 1991 in the Alps: two hikers found a glacier mummy over 5,000 years old on the Schnalstal glacier. The so-called Ötzi – the man from the ice is today considered one of the most important archaeological finds in Europe.
In the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, visitors can discover the famous mummy as well as numerous finds from his time. The exhibition tells the exciting story of Ötzi’s life and provides unique insights into the world of the Neolithic Age.
The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle
A particularly impressive excursion destination is the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle near Meran. Covering an area of over 12 hectares, one of the most beautiful garden complexes in Europe extends here.
In a natural amphitheater, plants from all over the world grow – from alpine plants to Mediterranean and exotic species. Various themed areas, viewpoints and experience stations make the visit a varied nature experience.
The gardens are open from April to November and are among the most popular excursion destinations in South Tyrol.
Wolfsthurn Castle – South Tyrolean State Museum for Hunting and Fishing
Above Mareit in the Ridnaun Valley rises the impressive Wolfsthurn Castle, one of the most beautiful baroque castles in South Tyrol. The magnificent building with its 365 windows today houses the South Tyrolean State Museum for Hunting and Fishing.
Visitors can not only learn about historical hunting traditions here, but also admire the richly decorated state rooms with their original furnishings. An excursion to the castle can be ideally combined with a hike, for example along the themed trail “Forest and Water”.
The castle is open from mid-April to mid-November.
The castles of Reifenstein and Sprechenstein
The region around Sterzing is also known for its impressive medieval castles. Particularly worth seeing are Reifenstein Castle and Sprechenstein Castle, both of which are perched on striking rocks above the Wipptal Valley.
Reifenstein Castle is one of the best-preserved castles in South Tyrol. During a guided tour through the historic rooms, chapels and inner courtyards, visitors immerse themselves deeply in the history of the Middle Ages.
Slightly above Sterzing lies Sprechenstein Castle, which, with its location high above the valley, offers a particularly impressive panorama. However, it is privately owned and cannot be visited.
Spring, summer and autumn at the Lahnerhof
The Lahnerhof is the ideal starting point for active and relaxing days in the South Tyrolean mountains in every season.
When in spring the meadows around Thuins begin to bloom and the first warm rays of sunshine brighten the mountains, the warm active season begins around the Lahnerhof. Walks through the awakening nature and first hikes provide a particularly relaxed start to the mountain summer.
In summer, the region shows itself at its most lively. Hikers discover the alpine huts in the valleys of Ratschings, Ridnaun, Pfitsch or Pflersch while cyclists undertake varied tours through the Wipptal Valley.
Autumn is considered one of the most beautiful times in the South Tyrolean mountains. Clear air, warm colors of the forests and wide views make hikes and excursions particularly atmospheric.
